Afterglow Johannesburg (2009, 2011)
Grids drawn in pencil on paper + watercolor, each 21 x 29,7cm .
In 2008 I spent some time teaching at Wits University School of Art in Johannesburg, South Africa. During my stay I became fascinated with the aesthetic traditions of the Zulu and the Tsonga tribe – especially in how language and message is integrated in every day objects. Beautifully patterned pieces of clothing or objects transport messages of gender, history and politics – readable only for the initiated.
