Screens (2011)

Oil on cotton, mounted on wood, each 60 x 60 x 3 cm

After a long intermission I went to Paris again last year. One evening I wanted to go out with a friend to eat couscous. I suggested Belleville, recalling the many North African restaurants there. Instead, we discovered a myriad of shops selling brightly coloured, patterned African materials. On the labels it said: ‘Original African wax print fabrics – produced in Holland’. I took four roles of material back with me to my studio in Berlin, where I used them as a creative medium in a dual sense: as the image-bearing medium and as an inspiration for new projections and images. The title came later: ‘Screens’.
